No, you do not need to discard the first drop of blood. There is no consequential difference in the blood glucose values measured in the first and second drop of blood. However, any kind of contamination of the fingertip such as due to dirt, food residue, etc. on finger tips, can affect your glucose readings. Therefore, it is important to wash your hands in warm water and soap before testing.

  • Wash your hands with lukewarm soap and water and ensure your hands are dry before testing.
  • You may warm your fingers to improve blood flow.
  • Lower your hands to below waist level. Then, softly massage the selected finger before pricking.
  • Hold the lancing device firmly against the side of your fingertip.
  • After lancing, softly massage the finger upwards towards the tip.
  • If the aforementioned steps still result in insufficient blood, increase the depth of lancing device.

Blood sugar or glucose comes in the body from the food we eat. It is also produced by our liver. If you have diabetes, your body cannot make proper use of this glucose, so it builds up in the blood and can’t be used as fuel. This condition is called diabetes mellitus.

When you test blood sugar using home testing blood glucose monitor (glucometer), your reading indicates the level of glucose in your blood at that time point. The HbA1c test on the other hand, provides information regarding your average blood sugar level over the past 3 months. Both these tests are equally important and must be conducted as directed by your healthcare professional.
